I’ve just had a new PC built with a beta Windows 7 OS, and agree it is disappointing to not have Windows Movie Maker in its latest version available.

I have downloaded the 2.6 for now, and do encourage MS to make their replacement product much better.

I really do not understand where Microsoft are going with Windows 7. So many things are improved, but then after the initial “that’s good” we are finding the bits they have removed.

I have already been battling as a Linux user the mess they made with KDE4. For all its faults though, you can always come back to the fact its open-source and so a completely different methodology to commercial software.

However, its scary to see Microsoft making similar mistakes. You expect so much more from commercial software, you don’t expect it to arrive broken and as far as I am concerned it coming with less features than the previous version IS broken.

Do recall that Apple pulled much the same thing when they dumped iMovie 6.0.2 for iMovie ’08. It similarly was rewritten from scratch, dumped the timeline, and was generally regarded as inferior.

The difference I see is that iMovie improved significantly in the ’09 version (although still without a timeline). Will Microsoft manage to sidestep Apple’s issues with their first rewrite? If not, how long will we have to wait for fixes, since Movie Maker isn’t on any known release schedule?
