This is partly an emotional reaction - a desire to reassert one's freedom of choice after being constrained in so many ways when using Windows and Office. But I think it is also partly due to a logical preference for "best of breed" rather than a monoculture. Yes it is the offline mail client problem, yes it is the SPAM, yes it is the intrusive ads and yes it (was) the storage. I didn't know about the UNIX history though, so that IS also interesting.
