Someone asked me today where developers hang out on the Net. Excluding platform-specific sites like MSDN, here\u2019s my first go at a top ten list, in alphabetical order \u2013 but I\u2019d love to hear other suggestions.<\/p>\n

Coding Horror<\/a> Jeff Attwood\u2019s site. Both Attwood and Spolsky are on the Stack Overflow team<\/p>\n Dzone<\/a> \u2013 DIGG<\/a> for developers, also includes Javalobby<\/a>, which was set up on a wave of indignation back in the nineties when Microsoft seemed to be endangering Java\u2019s run-anywhere promise, now a general Java discussion site.<\/p>\n Joel on Software<\/a> I don\u2019t always agree with Joel Spolsky, but he\u2019s an excellent writer and deserves inclusion if only for his piece on leaky abstractions<\/a>.<\/p>\n Reddit programming<\/a> \u2013 another DIGG for developers, actually I prefer this one to Dzone<\/p>\n Slashdot<\/a> \u2013 Geek news discussion site, not just for developers though you\u2019ll find plenty of them there. If you need to know the meaning of the site name, you are outside the target readership.<\/p>\n Stack Overflow<\/a> \u2013 community question and answer site for developers, mentioned by everyone when I asked about developers\u2019 favourite sites on Twitter.<\/p>\n The Code Project<\/a> \u2013 masses of code samples, mainly .NET but also Java, SQL, Linux<\/p>\n The Daily WTF<\/a> \u2013 where WTF stands for \u201cWorse than failure\u201d, allegedly<\/p>\n The Register<\/a> \u2013 IT news site willing to \u201cBite the hand that feeds IT\u201d, includes a developer section<\/a>. Disclaimer: I am a contributor.<\/p>\n TheServerSide<\/a> which has mainly Java<\/a> but also a .NET<\/a> site, both geared to enterprise development. Seems less busy of late.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Other developer haunts I considered:<\/p>\n DaniWeb<\/a> \u2013 IT discussion community with an active software development forum<\/p>\n DeveloperFusion<\/a> \u2013 based in the UK, developer-focused articles, blogs and resources<\/p>\n Dr Dobbs<\/a> \u2013 web site for the best software development magazine, docked several points for ad videos that auto-play when you visit<\/p>\n Rick Strahl\u2019s web log<\/a> \u2013 where you go to discover what really works or does not work in ASP.NET<\/p>\n SDTimes<\/a> \u2013 web site for a family of Software development magazines, some good articles but not really a community<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Update: Other sites I probably should have included:<\/p>\n InfoQ<\/a> \u2013 developer-focused articles, Agile\/Enterprise focus, sponsor the excellent QCon conferences<\/p>\n Someone asked me today where developers hang out on the Net.
