{"id":1218,"date":"2009-02-09T13:14:34","date_gmt":"2009-02-09T12:14:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.itwriting.com\/blog\/1218-google-says-top-two-results-get-most-of-the-hits-but-what-about-ads.html"},"modified":"2009-02-09T13:14:34","modified_gmt":"2009-02-09T12:14:34","slug":"google-says-top-two-results-get-most-of-the-hits-but-what-about-ads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.itwriting.com\/blog\/1218-google-says-top-two-results-get-most-of-the-hits-but-what-about-ads.html","title":{"rendered":"Google says top two results get most of the hits \u2013 but what about ads?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/feedproxy.google.com\/~r\/blogspot\/MKuf\/~3\/Mfq3Ny7TUb0\/eye-tracking-studies-more-than-meets.html\" target=\"_blank\">post on the Official Google Blog<\/a> says that the first two search results get most of the clicks:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This pattern suggests that the order in which Google returned the results was successful; most users found what they were looking for among the first two results and they never needed to go further down the page.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px\">I knew you had to be on the first page \u2013 but the \u201ctop two\u201d result is even harder to achieve.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px\">It is significant though that Google\u2019s post makes no mention of ads. I am quite sure that the study included research into their effectiveness. Google has chosen not to reveal this aspect of the research.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px\">In particular, most Google search results do not look like the examples. Rather, they have ads at the top which look just like the other results, except with a different background colour and a faint \u201cSponsored Links\u201d at the right:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.itwriting.com\/images\/googlesearch.gif\" \/> <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-right: 0px\">My question: in a result list like this, which \u201ctop two\u201d gets the eyeballs and the clicks? The search results?
