{"id":1764,"date":"2009-09-07T09:19:27","date_gmt":"2009-09-07T08:19:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.itwriting.com\/blog\/1764-microsofts-confusing-web-sites.html"},"modified":"2009-09-07T09:19:27","modified_gmt":"2009-09-07T08:19:27","slug":"microsofts-confusing-web-sites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.itwriting.com\/blog\/1764-microsofts-confusing-web-sites.html","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft\u2019s confusing web sites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scott Barnes <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/msmossyblog\/archive\/2009\/09\/06\/apple-vs-microsoft-web-usability.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">draws attention<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webdesignerdepot.com\/2009\/05\/apple-vs-microsoft-a-website-usability-study\/\" target=\"_blank\">this study<\/a> which compares the usability of the Apple vs the Microsoft web sites.<\/p>\n<p>Some things are bad for so long that you stop complaining about them. This is one of them. Let\u2019s acknowledge though that there are mitigating factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Microsoft is a huge organisation, has a vast number of products, and creating a coherent web presence that covers everything is a monumental task.<\/li>\n<li>The goals and technical abilities of visitors to Microsoft\u2019s web properties vary enormously.<\/li>\n<li>Staying up-to-date is a challenge. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Against that though, Microsoft is in the IT business and supplies both web design and web server technology; it regularly talks up the importance of \u201cuser experience\u201d and must be aware that potential users will judge to some extent by what they find.<\/p>\n<p>I use \u201cweb sites\u201d in the plural because there are many Microsoft web sites. Perhaps there should be one; but as the referenced study observes, there are numerous different designs. There are different domains too, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/silverlight.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Silverlight.net<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asp.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">ASP.Net<\/a> and so on.<\/p>\n<p>Take my experience this morning for example. My question: how many processors are supported by Windows Small Business Server 2008? My Google search got me to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/sbs\/en\/us\/editions-overview.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, an overview showing the two editions, Standard and Premium. I clicked Compare Features and got to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/sbs\/en\/us\/compare-features.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, which says I have to visit the Server 2008 web site to find out more about the \u201cServer 2008 product technologies\u201d. I click the link, and now I am looking at info on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/windowsserver2008\/en\/us\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Server 2008 R2<\/a> \u2013 only I know already that SBS is based on the original Server 2008, not the R2 version. It\u2019s not clear where to go next, other than back to Google.<\/p>\n<p>Some general observations, after clicking around various SBS sites (I had some other questions too):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s hard to get past the marketing blather to clear information<\/li>\n<li>Too many links lead to menu pages with further links \u2013 sometimes it feels like an endless loop<\/li>\n<li>I found lots of information in the future tense, clearly prepared before launch and not updated<\/li>\n<li>Regionalisation is poor. You can start on the UK site but end up with pricing and availability information applicable only to the US<\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s a <a href=\"http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sbs\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Technet site<\/a> as well as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/sbs\/en\/us\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">general<\/a> site and the differentiation is not clear. I suppose the general site is meant to be more business\/marketing focused, but there\u2019s plenty of overlap<\/li>\n<li>In general pages are too busy with each one offering a splurge of choices<\/li>\n<li>Some things are just inherently confusing \u2013 like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/sbs\/en\/us\/licensing-overview.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">CAL policy<\/a>, which has four different types of CAL (user and device in combination with standard and premium) that can be mixed and matched: you can use standard CALs with SBS Premium if they are not used with \u201cPremium features\u201d. Whoever dreamt that up has never worked in a small business.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Clearly this is not a simple problem to solve. At the same time, it is hard to understand why it is so bad. It is a large company problem: maybe too much bureaucracy, conflicting kingdoms, little budget following initial launch, everyone knows it is a problem but nobody knows who should be fixing it, that kind of thing.<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, I think the processor limit is actually the same in SBS 2008 Standard as in Server 2008 Standard R2, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/windowsserver2008\/en\/us\/r2-compare-specs.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">this chart<\/a> shows it to be 4 sockets. In other words, you can have up to four physical processors and still benefit from multiple cores.
