It is a detail from the full image, so you can view it at full resolution:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gadgets.itwriting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/image18.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/gadgets.itwriting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/image_thumb18.png\" width=\"404\" height=\"274\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>and here is the Lumia:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gadgets.itwriting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/image19.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/gadgets.itwriting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/image_thumb19.png\" width=\"404\" height=\"254\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Note that I am not using a tripod so the quality is influenced by how good the image stabilisation software is, as well as the inherent quality of the optics.<\/p>\n<p>Sony has a special demo to show off the low-light performance of the Z2. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gadgets.itwriting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/image20.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/gadgets.itwriting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/image_thumb20.png\" width=\"404\" height=\"277\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>See that small hole? You align the phone so that the camera can see through the hole, and take a picture. It looks like it will turn out blank, but actually picks up an image from the low light:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gadgets.itwriting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/image21.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/gadgets.itwriting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/image_thumb21.png\" width=\"404\" height=\"229\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is not full resolution, but you get the idea.<\/p>\n<p>My first effort with the Lumia was a disaster:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gadgets.itwriting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/image22.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/gadgets.itwriting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/image_thumb22.png\" width=\"404\" height=\"229\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was sure it could do better, so I whacked up the ISO sensitivity and set the shutter to 4s:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gadgets.itwriting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/image23.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/gadgets.itwriting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/image_thumb23.png\" width=\"404\" height=\"229\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Still, in terms of automatic settings detection, the Sony proved more effective.<\/p>\n<p>Which camera is better? On this quick and dirty test I felt that both phones performed well, but I am not ready to give up the Lumia 1020 yet. Then again, you do have to live with the slight protrusion of the Lumia 1020 lens from the body, whereas the Z2 is perfectly smooth.<\/p>\n<p>Disclaimer: I am not a photographer and my interest is in taking quick pictures of decent quality conveniently rather than getting the best that can be achieved.
