{"id":294,"date":"2007-08-10T13:02:18","date_gmt":"2007-08-10T12:02:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.itwriting.com\/blog\/?p=294"},"modified":"2007-08-10T13:02:18","modified_gmt":"2007-08-10T12:02:18","slug":"microsofts-vista-update-sp1-by-another-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.itwriting.com\/blog\/294-microsofts-vista-update-sp1-by-another-name.html","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft&#8217;s Vista update &#8211; SP1 by another name?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve installed Microsoft&#8217;s two new Vista patches &#8211;&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/938194\" target=\"_blank\">one for reliability<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/?kbid=938979\" target=\"_blank\">the other for performance<\/a>. No ill-effects so far and in fact the OS does feel a bit snappier. The updates claim to fix some long-standing gripes, including this one:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When you copy or move a large file, the &#8220;estimated time remaining&#8221; takes a long time to be calculated and displayed. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It also fixes some nasty-sounding bugs that I haven&#8217;t encountered, like this one:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When you synchronize an offline file to a server, the offline file is corrupted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>and includes some vague but important-sounding issues like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Poor memory management performance occurs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another key fix is related to one that has received a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itwriting.com\/blog\/?p=110\" target=\"_blank\">lot of attention<\/a> on this blog (over 160 comments):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The computer stops responding, and you receive a &#8220;Display driver stopped responding and has recovered&#8221; error message. You can restart the computer only by pressing the computer&#8217;s power button.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I fixed this with a driver update, but possibly the driver update was a workaround for a bug in Vista. That seems plausible since it occurs with drivers from different vendors &#8211; though note that I did not usually experience a complete hang when I encountered this problem. Here&#8217;s another goodie:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The computer stops responding or restarts unexpectedly when you play video games or perform desktop operations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are many more fixes listed, and overall, this looks like a must-have update; and indeed, it will be rolled out automatically through Windows update in due course, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.zdnet.com\/microsoft\/?p=628\" target=\"_blank\">according to Mary Jo Foley<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Clearly this is <strong>not<\/strong> SP1, though it is larger than other Vista updates I&#8217;ve seen. Why the delay before the real SP1? The rumour is that this is because of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.windowsitpro.com\/Articles\/ArticleID\/96357\/96357.html?Ad=0\" target=\"_blank\">changes being made in response to Google&#8217;s complaints<\/a> about search integration.
