{"id":525,"date":"2008-02-25T12:35:57","date_gmt":"2008-02-25T11:35:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.itwriting.com\/blog\/?p=525"},"modified":"2008-02-25T12:35:57","modified_gmt":"2008-02-25T11:35:57","slug":"chris-anderson-on-freeconomics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.itwriting.com\/blog\/525-chris-anderson-on-freeconomics.html","title":{"rendered":"Chris Anderson on Freeconomics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chris Anderson, the Wired editor who coined the term &#8220;long tail&#8221;, has written a lengthy piece on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/techbiz\/it\/magazine\/16-03\/ff_free\">Free &#8211; why $0.00 is the future of business<\/a>, and is writing a book on the subject.<\/p>\n<p>It caught my eye in part because of what Sun&#8217;s Jonathan Schwartz told me the other day: the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itwriting.com\/blog\/?p=519\">only acceptable price is free<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The idea must terrify Microsoft, which makes most of its money from software licenses, while letting third-parties take the profits from custom development and services. Companies are less vulnerable if they sell both hardware and software, or have strong services departments.<\/p>\n<p>The paradox here is that even when the marginal cost drops close to zero, there still has to be a business model.
