After all, we have had Windows 9x before \u2013 that is, Windows 95 and Windows 98.<\/p>\n<p>Former Windows chief Steven Sinofsky tweeted this a few hours ago:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.itwriting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/image.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.itwriting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/image_thumb.png\" width=\"244\" height=\"73\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>which if you <a href=\"https:\/\/searchcode.com\/?q=if%28version%2Cstartswith%28%22windows+9%22%29\" target=\"_blank\">follow the link<\/a> gets this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.itwriting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/image1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"image\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.itwriting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/image_thumb1.png\" width=\"404\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first of these throws an exception if the name of the OS starts with \u201cWindows 9\u201d; and there are plenty of others like it.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Windows version numbers are complex (Windows 95 actually reported itself as version 4.0) and well-written applications would get this right. There is also a year or so before Windows 10 is released, which gives time for developers, and the suppliers of runtimes like Java, to fix their code if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it seems to me plausible that avoiding a version headache was a factor behind the naming of Windows 10.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why did Microsoft call the Windows release after 8 version 10 rather than 9?
