{"id":966,"date":"2008-10-08T08:10:56","date_gmt":"2008-10-08T07:10:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.itwriting.com\/blog\/966-vista-even-things-control-panel-is-photos.html"},"modified":"2008-10-08T08:10:56","modified_gmt":"2008-10-08T07:10:56","slug":"vista-even-things-control-panel-is-photos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.itwriting.com\/blog\/966-vista-even-things-control-panel-is-photos.html","title":{"rendered":"Vista even thinks Control Panel is photos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of Vista\u2019s most annoying features is the tendency of Explorer to decide, first, that all your documents are music or photos; and second, that if they are, you care more about metadata like \u201cRating\u201d than humdrum details such as the date of the file.<\/p>\n<p>I had thought that Vista only did this if it found at least one media file in the folder, but today it happened with Control Panel:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.itwriting.com\/images\/vista_cp.gif\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>Notice how it highlights another user-hostile feature: the name of each applet is in a column too narrow to read, and several applets are indistinguishable from each other because they begin \u201cMicrosoft .NET Frame&#8230;\u201d or \u201cInternet Information S&#8230;\u201d; another triumph of branding over usability.<\/p>\n<p>What I wanted was the Event Viewer; and while I\u2019m in ranting mode, let me add that I much prefer the old NT Event Viewer to the Vista effort. The new one takes ages to populate a clever multi-pane view, which presents too much information in tiny scrolling panels. In practice I use the tree view on the left to select the log I want, subverting the new design by doing exactly what I would have done in the old Event Viewer. Habit possibly; but there are real design problems with the new Event Viewer. Administrators will always choose practical over pretty.<\/p>\n<p>See here for my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itwriting.com\/blog\/84-why-does-vista-think-my-documents-are-music.html\">earlier complaint<\/a> about Explorer views and a partial remedy.
